In December 1914, a woman was found dead in her bath at a lodging house in Highgate, North London, the day after her wedding. The inquest called it misadventure. It was the third time a newly married woman had died this way, and each time the husband stood to gain. This animated documentary from British Crime Vault follows the investigation led by Detective Inspector Arthur Neil of the Metropolitan Police: two readers who noticed the same pattern in newspaper reports, a watch kept on a Shepherd's Bush solicitor's office, the medical evidence of Dr Bernard Spilsbury, and the Old Bailey trial of George Joseph Smith in 1915. It also explains the ruling on "similar fact" evidence that made R v Smith a leading case in English law. We remember Bessie Mundy, Alice Burnham and Margaret Lofty. ⚖️ Dramatised animated reconstruction based on court records and contemporary sources. Narration is based on the published trial record, police papers and the Court of Criminal Appeal judgment. Quotations come from testimony and documents; no dialogue has been invented. Where accounts differ, we follow the record and say where a detail comes from. Images are AI-assisted artistic reconstructions, not photographs. Documents and newspapers shown are recreations, and the narration voice is synthetic. 📚 SOURCES • E. R. Watson (ed.), Trial of George Joseph Smith, Notable British Trials (1922).
