Drive through the real rural China of today, beginning among the sunlit rice fields of western Hunan and gradually climbing into villages surrounded by the Wuling Mountains. This uninterrupted 24.2-kilometre 4K journey contains no famous tourist attraction or staged performance—only ordinary town streets, working farmland, family homes and the mountain roads connecting everyday communities. The drive begins at Zhaoshi Town Government in Longshan County, within the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. Soon after leaving the town centre, the road opens onto broad rice paddies, scattered houses and layered mountain views. As the journey continues, the elevation rises from approximately 622 to 833 metres, and the landscape changes from open farmland to wooded hills, narrow valleys and winding village roads before reaching Wanjiapeng Village. Zhaoshi lies deep in the Wuling Mountains and is one of Longshan County’s important grain-producing areas. The Pidu River passes through the township, while fertile, selenium-rich soil supports approximately 8,500 mu—around 567 hectares—of rice cultivation. Local rice is also being developed under the regional identity of “Zhaoshi Rice.” The peaceful agricultural scenery is supported by a changing system of production. Agricultural drones are used for fertilising and crop protection, while seedling cultivation, planting, harvesting and straw processing are increasingly mechanised. These fields therefore represent more than a traditional rural landscape: they show how established farming practices and modern agricultural technology now exist side by side. Wanjiapeng Village is spread across approximately 12.3 square kilometres of increasingly mountainous terrain, with homes distributed among the hills rather than concentrated in one compact settlement. In communities like this, concrete village roads are essential infrastructure, connecting homes and farmland with schools, medical services, local markets and the wider region. Longshan County lies in the mountainous north-western corner of Hunan, close to Hubei and Chongqing. Its combination of ridges, valleys, streams and karst landscapes has produced fragmented farmland, hillside settlements and roads shaped by the terrain. Elsewhere in the county are well-known natural destinations such as Bamian Mountain, Luota Stone Forest and Wulongshan Grand Canyon, but this video stays away from tourist sites and focuses on ordinary rural life. Longshan is also an important centre of Tujia culture. Traditions preserved in the county include the Baishou hand-waving dance, Maogusi ritual theatre, Tujia brocade, Daliuzi percussion, Tima songs and Dongdongkui music. At Liye Ancient Town, more than 37,000 Qin-dynasty bamboo and wooden slips were discovered, recording taxation, law, household registration, grain management and postal administration more than 2,000 years ago. Modern houses, older wooden homes, cultivated paddies and concrete roads now share the same mountain landscape, quietly documenting the continuing transformation of rural life in the Wuling Mountains. No talking and no music—only the natural sounds of the vehicle, tyres, wind, birds and village life. Watch with headphones or on a large screen for an immersive 4K drive through Hunan’s rice fields and mountain villages.
