On October 5, 2026, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel "for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics." The method lets scientists switch individual nerve cells on or off with light, and it began with a single-celled alga. Chlamydomonas is a microscopic green alga that senses light with a structure called an eyespot and moves in response. Hegemann and Nagel studied how it does this and found a protein they named channelrhodopsin. When blue light strikes it, the protein opens a channel in the cell membrane. Charged ions flow through, and the cell becomes electrically active. They published their results in 2003. The next step was Deisseroth's. If an algal cell could be switched with light, perhaps a neuron could as well. He introduced the gene for channelrhodopsin into nerve cells, so that shining blue light activated only the neurons carrying it, and he later did the same in the brains of living mice. Neuroscientists could previously observe which neurons were active, but activity alone doesn't show cause. Optogenetics lets researchers activate a chosen neuron at a chosen moment and watch whether movement, memory or behaviour changes. That turns correlation into a direct test of cause and effect between neural circuits and behaviour. The prize is shared equally among the three laureates, 12 million Swedish kronor in total. Others also contributed to the field, but Nobel rules limit the award to three people. Source: NobelPrize.org, Press Release, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026.
