This is the true story of Maximilian Schmidt — a 20-year-old with no friends, no girlfriend, and no criminal connections — who single-handedly built and ran Shiny Flakes, an online drug shop that moved roughly 900 kilograms of narcotics to about 14,500 customers across four continents, from a twelve-square-metre bedroom in his mother's flat in Leipzig. Every darknet marketplace before him lived behind Tor, PGP keys and hostile interfaces built by ideologues. Schmidt spotted the flaw everyone else missed: that friction cut the addressable market down to maybe one percent of the population. So at eighteen he asked the question that eventually put him in prison — why not sell drugs on the regular internet? He registered shinyflakes.to through an anonymous Tongan registrar in August 2013, then wrote the entire e-commerce backend himself, in PHP and JavaScript, on a ThinkPad at his childhood desk, in about six weeks. Then he indexed it with Google. It became the first drug marketplace in European internet history you could reach by typing three words into a search bar. The site looked like a mid-tier fashion retailer: clean white design, product grid photographed on his own DSLR, shopping cart, five-star reviews, volume discounts up to 25%, two-to-four-day EU shipping, and free replacements — at his own expense — for damaged or wrong orders. Customer reviews read like Amazon feedback. His routine never broke for fourteen straight months. Customer support and Bitcoin conversion from nine in the morning until eleven at night. Then the packing: a supermarket kitchen scale, glassine envelopes, a domestic vacuum sealer, print-at-home postage bought through hacked accounts. By three in the morning he'd have 40 to 120 parcels ready. Hood up, 80-litre backpack, yellow bicycle, four to seven different Deutsche Post parcel lockers across a fifteen-kilometre radius so no single machine would trip a volume alert. In bed by five. His mother, asleep in the next room, believed he resold clothes on eBay. And in every single parcel, he included one extra item: a small pack of Haribo gummy bears. It improved his reviews. It also became the single most useful piece of evidence the German postal police ever had — the one marker that let them pull his parcels out of a river of millions. By late January 2015 the shop was grossing over €450,000 a month. On February 26th, a twelve-officer tactical unit took his mother's door off its frame at 6:42 in the morning. In his childhood bedroom they found roughly 320 kilograms of narcotics sorted by dose, about €4 million in Bitcoin open on an unlocked laptop, and €48,000 in cash stuffed into skirting boards and wool socks.
