He opens on a regional manager who cleared every obstacle out of her team's path and, in doing so, stripped out the exact challenges that would have grown them. Mike credits Robert Greenleaf, who coined the term and defined the leader's job as serving the growth of the people they lead, and grants that the philosophy is sound and worth taking seriously, especially for any operator tempted to lean on their title. The failure, Mike argues, is in the definition of service most leaders carry into the work. When service gets read as removing all friction, the manager solves every problem before the team-member ever gets a shot, and that person never develops. The skill is discrimination. Clear the obstacles that have nothing to do with growth, the clogged approval process, the broken tool, the missing access, the pointless second sign-off, and leave in place the ones that build people, like the hardest resident conversation a team-member needs to walk through rather than around. Mike closes with a story that could have gone the other way. Driving between markets one night when a fire broke out at one of his communities, he got a call from his supervisor telling him to turn around. He declined, because the fire was already out and the team was on the phone, and what remained was the hard coordination work with the Red Cross and resources for displaced residents. He kept driving and stayed on the phone for hours, guiding and coaching while the team pulled it together themselves and grew from the effort.
