The Beast of Gévaudan was a mysterious man-eating creature that terrorized the Gévaudan province of 18th-century France (today's Lozère and the Margeride mountains) from 1764 to 1767. Under King Louis XV, dragoons, professional wolf hunters and the king's own gun bearer François Antoine hunted it, while shepherd children, Marie-Jeanne Vallet and hunter Jean Chastel fought back. This is the true story of France's most famous monster mystery. For three years, something "like a wolf, yet not a wolf" attacked shepherds and children in the remote mountains of south-central France. By one modern count, more than a hundred people died. Newspapers like the Courrier d'Avignon and the Gazette de France turned the attacks into a sensation across Europe, the Bishop of Mende called the beast a scourge from God, and Captain Duhamel's dragoons even disguised themselves as peasant women to lure it out. Young Jacques Portefaix and a band of children drove it off with sticks, Marie-Jeanne Vallet became the Maid of Gévaudan, and in 1765 François Antoine shot the giant Wolf of Chazes and had it stuffed for Versailles. But the killing didn't stop. It took until June 1767, when Jean Chastel fired during the Marquis d'Apcher's hunt, for the attacks to end. We separate fact from legend (no, the silver bullets probably weren't real), look at the Marin report, and follow the strange fate of the final beast's body, before weighing the theories: lion, hyena, wolfdog hybrid, a human killer, or simply wolves.
