What if I told you Nagapattinam had a direct connection with Chinese travellers and merchants more than 1,000 years ago? 😳🇮🇳🇨🇳 In this episode of Tamil Traces in China, we look at two fascinating Chinese historical records that reveal the importance of Nagapattinam as a major maritime and Buddhist centre. 📜 《大唐西域求法高僧传》 — Datang Xiyu Qiufa Gaoseng Zhuan ✍️ Author: Yi Jing (义净) 🗓️ Written around 691–692 CE Yi Jing was a Chinese Buddhist monk who travelled through the maritime routes of Southeast Asia and India. His record describes the sea routes used by Chinese monks travelling toward India and Sri Lanka, including a route from Southeast Asia to Nagapattinam and onward to Sri Lanka. Then we come to another incredible Chinese book: 📜 《岛夷志略》 — Dao Yi Zhi Lue ✍️ Author: Wang Dayuan (汪大渊) 🗓️ Completed around 1349 CE Wang Dayuan recorded a place called Tuta / Pa-tan, identified with Nagapattinam, and described a remarkable brick/earthen tower standing there. Most amazingly, he recorded that the tower had a stone inscription written in Chinese characters: “咸淳三年八月毕工” Meaning the construction was completed in the 8th month of the 3rd year of the Xianchun era — 1267 CE. The account says Chinese people who came to the place had the inscription carved into the stone. This wasn’t just an isolated structure. Historical evidence points to Nagapattinam as an important international maritime centre, connecting South India with Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia and China. Chinese merchants were active there, and archaeological evidence includes Chinese ceramics and Chinese coins found around Nagapattinam. The famous China Pagoda / Chinese brick tower survived for centuries and was still standing in the 19th century before being demolished in 1867. So when we talk about Tamil Traces in China, the story doesn’t only go from Tamil Nadu to China. It also shows how Chinese monks, merchants and ships were travelling to the Tamil coast. 🚢🇨🇳🇮🇳 Nagapattinam was much more than a local port — it was part of a much larger Indian Ocean maritime network nagapattinam history, nagapattinam china connection, chinese pagoda nagapattinam, china pagoda tamil nadu, nagapattinam chinese tower, 1267 nagapattinam, wang dayuan, dao yi zhi lue, yi jing, datang xiyu qiufa gaoseng zhuan, ancient china india trade, ancient tamil china trade, nagapattinam international port, chola port nagapattinam, tamil traces in china, tamil history, tamil maritime history, chinese merchants india, ancient indian ocean trade, tamil nadu history, china tamil connection, tamil china history, little indian everywhere #littleindianeverywhere #chola #chinaintamil #nagapattinam #tamilhistory #tamilnadu #tamiltracesinchina #nagapattinamhistory #chinapagoda #chinatamilconnection #wangdayuan #yijing #hanchistory #ancienthistory #maritimetrade #indianoceantrade #ancienttrade #chinesehistory #chinamercantile #cholaport #cholahistory #tamilheritage #tamilculture
