We paid $4,500 for a monster lathe on Facebook Marketplace without knowing whether it worked. Now we have to unload roughly 8,000 pounds, squeeze it into our Helmsburg fabrication shop, and find out what we actually bought! But first, we’re putting the fab shop to work building tools for our new overhead bridge crane. Hunter and Tucker help fabricate an adjustable track roller lifting tool, a spreader bar, and a wall rack to finally get our chains and lifting straps organized. The roller tool has a simple idea behind it: use the old roller as a counterbalance, pull it out, spin the tool around, and lift the replacement into place. We take it from scrap steel and CNC plasma cutting to welding, paint, and a real test changing dozer rollers. Then we head to Helmsburg with our Marketplace lathe. Hunter gets some practice maneuvering the gooseneck trailer through tight quarters, we unload the machine with a telehandler, and our electrician gets the three phase power connected. With a 26 inch swing, 80 inches between centers, and metric threading capability, this machine could be a useful addition for hydraulic cylinder repair—once we figure out its gears and missing tooling! We also take you around the Helmsburg shop to see the lathes, welders, CNC plasma table, press brake, shear, and extra equipment we’re still discovering in storage. As always, there’s plenty of Kevin commentary along the way. Would you have gambled $4,500 on that lathe? And would you use a roller changing tool like the one we built? Let us know in the comments!
