Japan's advance across the Pacific seemed unstoppable. Then came the Battle of the Coral Sea. In May 1942, American and Japanese carrier forces fought a battle unlike anything that had come before. The opposing fleets never directly saw or fired on one another—their aircraft carried the fight across hundreds of miles of ocean. Japan was moving toward Port Moresby, New Guinea, while American intelligence helped prepare an interception. The fighting began around Tulagi before escalating into a major carrier battle involving USS Yorktown, USS Lexington, Shōkaku, and Zuikaku. American aircraft sank the Japanese light carrier Shōhō. Japanese aircraft struck back, damaging USS Lexington and USS Yorktown. On May 8, American aircraft heavily damaged Shōkaku, while Japanese attacks eventually forced Lexington's crew to abandon the carrier. But the most important consequence came beyond the ships that were sunk. Japan's seaborne attempt to capture Port Moresby was stopped. Shōkaku was too badly damaged to participate in the coming Battle of Midway, while Zuikaku's depleted air group also kept her out of the operation. The Coral Sea had not destroyed Japan's carrier force. But it had stopped Japan's advance toward Port Moresby—and helped shape the battle that came next.
