Michael Duwe, aka Mickie D, is a composer, musician, and music producer from Berlin. In addition to composing and producing soundtracks for TV series, he has released various solo albums, including his best-known work, “Mickie D’s Unicorn” (IC/WEA 1979), and has collaborated with such diverse bands, musicians, and producers as Agitation Free, Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze, Manuel Goettsching, Michael Shrieve (Santana), Wolfgang Loos (Alphaville) or Conny Plank. Mickie D is regarded as a crossover figure in the West Berlin electronic and Krautrock scene of the 1970s: connected to key figures in this scene, yet with a distinctly unique style of his own. His first solo project is described as a hybrid of rock, electronic music, and narrative fantasy, as “a true synthesis of electronic music and rock,” (musikexpress), “a peculiar blend of Berlin School synthesizer sounds, space guitars, and often polyphonic vocals, a milestone in the fusion of pop and electronic music at that time” (Bernd Kistenmacher “Ferne Ziele”). It is close to the Berlin School’s dramaturgy but is not confined to its often instrumental framework. The album “Aladdin – It’s Fantasy,” first released in 1993 and now available again as a reissue, feels like a belated continuation of the same concept: electronic music as the foundation, guitars as the color, and the often polyphonic vocals as the "icing on the cake". Following “Sailing To The Sun,” “Rub That Lamp” is the second single released from this album. Notable here are the deep voice, the driving groove of the Mini Moog, the mystical synth melody and the cool guitars; the song tells the story of Aladdin’s magic lamp from the perspective of the genie, who asks what wishes he may grant - so please - “Rub That Lamp”!
