Everywhere he looked, people were carrying bricks in packs upon their backs. in stacks upon their heads. a brick in each hand or dragged great sacks behind them. The traveler asked a man (Where do all these bricks come from?) The man said We make our own or are given bricks by others. (What do people do with them?) The man said “We Carry them.” (For How Long?) “For as long as they have them. Because that is what we do here. We carry bricks.” (Is there honor in carrying many bricks?) “Oh no,” said the man. "Quite the opposite. The more bricks you carry, the more people despise you for having them.” The traveler continued into the city. Everywhere he looked he saw people carrying bricks Old people, Young people, Rich people, Poor people Some struggled beneath enormous loads. Others carried only one or two. Some displayed their bricks openly Others hid them beneath their clothes. And then the traveler saw a man without a single brick and hurried toward him. (Excuse me. Where are your bricks?) The man smiled and said “I put them down.” (Can you do that?) The man laughed and said “Let me tell you a story about a Storyteller.” He walked among the people and told them simple stories. When people listened to Him, they began to understand that they could put down their bricks. And so they did. People who had spent their whole lives bent beneath their burdens began to stand upright. They felt lighter. They laughed more. They loved more. But the Brick Masters did not like the Storyteller at all. So they began whispering about Him. They spread rumors and made accusations. They told people that the Storyteller was dangerous. But still the people came to hear Him and dropped their bricks on the ground. This frightened the Brick Masters so they went to the authorities and said, “The Storyteller is causing trouble. He is a danger to the kingdom.” So they condemned the Storyteller. And they killed Him. They killed the Storyteller. They killed the Storyteller. The Brick Masters thought that His stories would die with Storyteller. But they were wrong. They were wrong. The people who heard His stories began telling them to others. The Storyteller had made more storytellers. The stories traveled across mountains and deserts and oceans. And wherever the stories went, people began putting down their bricks. “And that,” said the man, “is what happened to me." "Someone told me about the Storyteller and I put down my bricks.” The traveler sat beside him. And removed the pack from his back and took out all the bricks. He took out all the bricks.
