Starting on Highway G210 in Guanghuojie Town, Ningshan County, this journey heads south into the heart of China’s Qinling Mountains. Over 59 kilometres, the road passes layered ridges, narrow valleys, dense forests and small mountain settlements before reaching the G210–Xunhuang Road junction near Xunyangba Village. This is one of the most representative mountain-driving sections of the Qinba Scenic Highway in Ningshan. Under an overcast sky, the Qinling landscape feels quieter, deeper and more atmospheric. The road climbs and descends between 730 and 1,404 metres, following mountainsides, streams and river valleys through continuous curves, S-bends and steep gradients. G210, officially part of the Mandula–Fangchenggang Highway, is an important north–south national road. Approximately 129 kilometres pass through Ningshan County, linking mountain communities such as Guanghuojie, Jiangkou, Xunyangba and Ningshan’s county town. It has long provided an important connection between Xi’an, Ankang and southern Shaanxi, and now forms a core section of the Qinba Scenic Highway. Through Ningshan, the general course of G210 follows or runs close to the ancient Ziwu Road. This historic corridor once connected Chang’an with Hanzhong, Sichuan and regions farther south. Soldiers, imperial couriers, merchants and travellers crossed the Qinling Mountains through these passes and valleys for centuries. Modern pavement has replaced the old trail, but the route still follows a transport landscape shaped by thousands of years of movement between northern and southern China. Guanghuojie was formerly known as Shagoukou and served as a traditional resting place after crossing the mountains. After construction of G210 began in 1958, it developed into an important supply stop for vehicles travelling between Xi’an, Ankang and Sichuan. During the 1980s and 1990s, more than 50 restaurants operated along a street only about 300 metres long. Its trucks, hotels, restaurants and mountain-produce shops earned it the nickname “Little Hong Kong” of the Qinling Mountains. After railways and expressways redirected much of the long-distance traffic, Guanghuojie gradually shifted toward eco-tourism, rural holidays and mountain recreation. Guesthouses, family restaurants and shops selling cured meat, dried tofu, honey and mushrooms can still be found along the road. Nearby tourism includes canyon scenery, rafting, skiing, forest retreats and outdoor activities, while food, parking and basic supplies are relatively easy to find. South of Guanghuojie, G210 enters the extensive forest landscape of northern Ningshan. The county has a forest coverage rate of 96.24 percent, with mountains, streams, cliffs and deep valleys forming the dominant scenery. Spring brings wild flowers and fresh green leaves, while autumn covers the slopes in layers of colour. The wider Ningshan and Qinling ecosystem also provides important habitat for giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, takins and crested ibises. Recent projects have upgraded pavement, major maintenance and safety facilities along the Ningshan section of G210. The Qinba Scenic Highway programme is also adding signs, rest areas, roadside stations and small scenic viewpoints. The Xunyangba roadside station is already in service, offering parking, rest facilities, hot water, charging, accessible facilities and displays about local tourism and the history of G210. The Yueheliang Tunnel and connecting-road project remains in the preparatory stage and is intended to improve future access through the mountains. Although the pavement is generally good, this remains a genuine Qinling mountain highway. Some sections have sharp curves, steep gradients and limited visibility. Higher areas may experience snow, ice and slippery surfaces in winter. Follow posted speed limits, maintain a safe distance and watch carefully for approaching vehicles around blind bends.
