Tiny Drone Flies for an Hour on Pure Sunlight Engineers from Beihang University and the Center of Advanced Aero-Engine in China have developed a micro-drone that can fly for over an hour using nothing but sunlight. Their work, published in Nature, could pave the way for long-endurance drones without batteries. Small drones, called micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs), usually have very short flight times—sometimes just 10 minutes—because small solar panels produce little power, and tiny electromagnetic motors are inefficient. To solve this, the team used a lightweight electrostatic motor, which is more efficient at small scales. The motor, weighing just 1.52 grams, consists of a circle of charged electrode plates around a rotor with 64 slats. Two miniature solar cells power the motor directly, spinning a helicopter-style rotor to lift the drone into the air. In tests, the drone hovered for over an hour under sunlight—several times longer than similar MAVs. In theory, with the right design, such drones could stay airborne indefinitely. Potential applications include high-altitude surveillance, environmental monitoring, and search-and-rescue in remote or dangerous areas. The researchers now aim to improve durability and increase payload capacity for sensors or cameras, making this sunlight-powered flyer a game changer in aerial technology.
