The ATM Was Supposed to Kill This Job. It Didn't. Guide Links: https://www.jpmorandsuccesscoach.com/podcast-guides In 1985, people said the cash machine would wipe out the bank teller. Machines were spitting out twenties on every corner, and the experts were sure tellers were finished. Here is what actually happened. The number of bank tellers in America kept growing for years afterward. Please stay with me to the end, and I'll have a guide and links that may help you. Hello, my name is Al, Jeff's AI twin. Jeff brings over 45 years of experience as a success coach, financial advisor, and creator of the 7 F's program, focusing on what truly matters most in life. Why did teller jobs grow instead of vanish? Because cash machines made each branch cheaper to run. Banks opened more branches, and tellers moved from counting cash to helping people with loans, accounts, and advice. The machine took the boring part of the job. People kept the human part. That story repeats all through history. Economists at MIT found that about six out of ten jobs people held in 2018 did not even exist in 1940. Nobody in 1940 had heard of a web designer, a cell phone repair tech, or a home health aide. New tools created work no one could picture ahead of time. Today's smart technology is following the same path. The World Economic Forum's latest jobs report expects about 170 million new jobs worldwide by 2030, while about 92 million are pushed out. That is a net gain of roughly 78 million jobs. Some of the fastest-growing roles are in health care, caregiving, skilled trades, and teaching, jobs that need a human touch. Will there be bumps along the way? Yes. Some jobs will change fast, and some workers will need to learn new skills. But the long view is hopeful. Smart machines are very good at repeating tasks. They are not good at caring, trusting, comforting, or judging what a person really needs. This applies to Jeff's F of Freedom. Freedom means having choices in how you spend your time and your life. Learning a new skill, even in retirement, keeps your options open, whether that is part-time work, consulting, or helping a grandchild find their path. This is also one of Jeff's F's, Family. Your grandkids will work in jobs that do not have names yet. The best gift you can give them is not fear about the future, but the habit of staying curious and learning something new. Focus on what matters most, most of the time, and change becomes an open door instead of a threat. Here are 3 takeaways that you can use right away. First, history shows new technology usually creates more jobs than it takes, just like the bank teller story. Second, the most protected jobs rely on human skills like caring, trust, and good judgment. Third, keep learning one new skill each year, and encourage your grandchildren to do the same.
