Russian Oil Imports Decline: How India Is Securing More Crude From Gulf Countries? | STS क्या है? India is changing its crude oil import strategy as Russian oil supplies decline and tensions rise around the Strait of Hormuz. In September, India increased crude oil imports from key Gulf suppliers including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. Their combined share of India’s total oil imports rose to 36.7%, compared with around 26% in August. A key part of this strategy is Ship-to-Ship (STS) oil transfer, where crude oil is transferred from one tanker to another at sea before the larger tanker continues towards India. Meanwhile, India’s Russian crude imports fell by around 9% to 1.9 million barrels per day in September, although Russia still accounted for more than 35% of India’s total crude oil purchases.
