That wind has blown across your land your whole life. It blows at night when the sun is gone. It blows in February when the sky has been gray for nine days running. It blows hardest in a storm, which is exactly when a man most wants a light he can count on. And it has never sent you a bill or asked your permission. And you have not caught one bit of it. I am Elias Yoder. I farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. My place has never been tied into the public power company and it never will be. In this video I show you a machine I built in my shop from a piece of plastic pipe and a motor somebody threw away. It cost under twenty dollars and took an afternoon and part of the next morning. Let me be plain about what it is and what it is not, because I would rather you hear the limit from me at the start than find it out after you have built the thing. This is a real generator and it makes real electricity. It is also a small one. It charges a battery, and that battery runs barn lights, a shop light, a fence charger, a radio, a small root cellar fan, or a hand tool on charge. It will not run your house. Anybody who tells you a pipe and a junked motor will run a refrigerator is selling you something. But a barn you can see in on a moonless night, without touching a wire from anybody, is not a small thing. My grandfather kept a steel windmill on this place. Not for electricity, for water. When it quit he climbed the tower and fixed it himself, and he was a farmer and not a mechanic. I asked him once why we did not get a pump like the neighbors had. He said a machine you can climb is worth more than a machine you cannot. The whole build comes off that sentence. What you will learn: - How a curved piece of pipe catches wind and turns a shaft - Why the motor in a broken treadmill is already a generator - What a blocking diode does, and why two dollars saves your battery - The full parts list and what each piece costs - Where to find a motor cheap, and the test for whether one will work - How to cut and balance blades so the machine does not shake apart - The five dollar step that decides one season or ten years - Tower height, guy wires, and why height beats every clever trick - The wire mistake that loses half of what you catch - How to test your spot with a meter before committing a battery - How to shut it down from the ground before a storm - The twice a year maintenance that keeps it running - What a charged battery actually runs, and what it never will - The simpler upright version, and the trade you make for it Safety, plainly. Blades at speed are dangerous and a failure throws hard plastic in every direction, so never stand downwind of a running machine and never work on one while it turns. Tie the blades or short the motor leads first. A tower comes down if you skimp on the footing or guy wires, so set it away from where anybody walks. And a lead battery gives off gas while charging, so keep it ventilated, away from flame, and out of reach of children. Practices differ between Amish communities. In mine we allow a modest bit of caught power kept on our own land for practical work. The stricter orders do not, and they have their own good reasons. What we all hold to is the same. The trouble was never light. The trouble is dependence. There is no rebate for a machine like this, no certification, and no installer who will recommend it, and I do not blame him since there is no commission in a piece of pipe. There is no scheme in it. The money simply runs the other way. Nobody can sell you the wind, so nobody has a reason to mention it. Tell me in the comments what county you are in, how old your house is, and whether the wind runs steady across your place or comes in fits between the trees. That decides which machine you should build. Next time I want to talk about the battery, because that is where most folks lose everything they catch. A good one serves eight or ten years, and the same one treated poorly is dead in eighteen months, and the difference is a few habits that cost nothing. Go stand in your yard tonight and feel that wind go past you, and understand that it is already yours and always was.
