Join AEI for a special gathering to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington. Five sessions will feature AEI scholars in dialogue with distinguished guests to discuss the march and its legacy. In the first session, Taylor Branch, author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning Parting the Waters: America in the King Years 1954–63 (Simon & Schuster, 1989), will give the morning’s keynote on the day-by-day history of the march. Afterward, AEI’s Yuval Levin will interview Mr. Branch about the march’s historic significance for the Civil Rights Movement. In the second session, AEI’s Ryan Streeter will moderate a discussion about the march’s legacy for African Americans today, featuring veteran journalist Robert A. George, the Wall Street Journal’s Jason Riley, and AEI’s Ian Rowe. In the third session, veteran journalist John Harwood will moderate a discussion among AEI’s Robert Doar; top President John F. Kennedy biographer, Fredrik Logevall; and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Robert F. Kennedy’s eldest daughter. They will discuss the Kennedy administration’s relationship with the march and the broader movement. In the fourth session, civil rights activist Robert Woodson, founder of the Woodson Center and former AEI scholar, will reflect on the march and its meaning to him in a conversation with Mr. Doar. In the final session, Rev. Eugene Rivers will deliver a message. We hope you will join us to mark the march’s anniversary and the ultimate success of the Civil Rights Movement.
