Hemanth, a 21-year-old relative of the victim, Gopika, had reportedly been harassing her for some time, pressuring her to accept his love. When Gopika's parents reprimanded him and she herself rejected his advances, he developed a grudge against her. Following a carefully planned attack, he entered a school classroom carrying an electric saw and brutally attacked Gopika. He also injured another girl who tried to intervene, cutting her leg. After the attack, Hemanth escaped into the Atmakur forest area. When the police arrived to catch him, he attacked them with a knife. In response, the police opened fire at his legs in self-defence and took him into custody. Following the news of his amputation, people in the village have reportedly expressed relief and celebrated what they see as justice being served.
