At 52 years old, nearly 20 years removed from drag racing, he lined up at Texas Motorplex with a rebuilt dragster, borrowed parts, and debt hanging over his head. The sport had moved on — bigger budgets, factory backing, younger drivers. Hill had already burned through savings, mortgaged his motorcycle shop, and endured fifteen straight races without a single round win. Most stories end there. His didn’t. On April 9, 1988, Eddie Hill ran 4.990 seconds at 288 mph — the first four-second pass in Top Fuel history. What most people forget is that the run came on seven cylinders. One wrong move at nearly 300 mph, and the comeback would have ended in fire and twisted tubing. This was nitromethane, not nostalgia. Before and after that moment, there were blown engines, financial pressure, violent crashes on land and water, and rule changes written in the aftermath of destruction. Eddie Hill didn’t just break a barrier — he survived the cost of chasing it. This is the story of the Four Father of Drag Racing, and the thin line between making history and becoming it. #EddieHill #TopFuel #NHRA #DragRacing #FourSecondPass #Nitromethane #TexasMotorplex #MotorsportsHistory #IHRA #QuarterMile
