What we speak can encourage, strengthen, and bring life—or wound, divide, and bring destruction. 📖 Today’s Reading: Proverbs 18 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” — Proverbs 18:21 KJV What a powerful reminder that our words matter! The things we speak over ourselves, our families, our circumstances, and those around us can have a lasting impact. Wisdom teaches us to be intentional with our words and to allow God's truth to govern what comes out of our mouths. Throughout Proverbs 18, Solomon also reminds us of the importance of listening and seeking understanding before forming conclusions. “He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” — Proverbs 18:13 KJV Wisdom listens before it speaks. How often do we respond to situations based on what we think we know rather than taking the time to understand the whole matter? Sometimes our emotions, past experiences, or assumptions can influence how we interpret what someone says or does. But godly wisdom invites us to slow down, listen carefully, and seek truth before responding. Proverbs 18 also gives us a beautiful reminder of where our true security is found. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” — Proverbs 18:10 KJV Our safety and security are ultimately found in the Lord. When life feels uncertain, when relationships become difficult, or when circumstances seem overwhelming, we can turn to Him as our refuge and strength. This chapter also warns us about pride and the dangers of allowing offense to take root. “A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.” — Proverbs 18:19 KJV What a sobering picture of how offense can create barriers between people! When offense is left unaddressed, it can build walls where God desires reconciliation, understanding, and peace. Wisdom teaches us to guard our hearts without hardening them, to seek understanding rather than assume the worst, and to pursue peace wherever possible. And finally, Proverbs 18 reminds us of the value of genuine friendship. “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” — Proverbs 18:24 KJV Faithful relationships are a beautiful gift, and they are strengthened through love, truth, humility, and commitment.
