Grapes & Synterra : Vaemi VAEMI Synterra - A Generative Instrument That Transforms Environmental Data into Music VAEMI Synterra is a portable, performance-oriented generative instrument that transforms electrical changes from the organic and inorganic world into musical data. Changes in electrical resistance found in plants, fungi, fruits, the human body, water, soil, wood, metal, and various conductive surfaces can be incorporated into Synterra’s musical system. In addition to the supplied probe cables, the 3.5 mm sensor input, built-in light sensor, and conductive touch area on the panel can also be used as independent data sources. During startup, Synterra detects the electromagnetic field of its surroundings through its internal coil. The resulting data creates a reference that influences the instrument’s initial note distribution and timing behavior. This means that every startup can create a different starting point depending on the surrounding environment. Synterra does not simply convert the detected data directly into sound. It analyzes the data, processes it through probability and quantizer systems, and organizes it musically within the selected scale. Eight different scales, polyphony adjustable from 1 to 5 voices, and a selectable note range of 1 to 5 octaves allow the generative structure to remain tonal, layered, and controllable. MIDI notes can also be transposed within a range of -12 to +12 semitones. The internal sound engine includes 9 different synth patches that combine wavetable, FM, Karplus-Strong, resonance, drone, percussive, noise, and glitch characteristics. In addition to this sound engine, Synterra features 10 onboard effects, including stutter effects at different rhythmic divisions, Random Stutter, Delay Throw, Bit Crusher, two-directional Pitch Shift, Controlled Chaos, and Filter Sweep. Tempo-based effects can automatically synchronize with MIDI Clock received via USB. The Hold and Trigger system makes it possible to control Synterra’s free-flowing generative structure rhythmically. Notes can be triggered using the button on the panel, an external clock/gate signal, or MIDI. The Trigger input can also use appropriately leveled audio and piezo signals solely as event sources. This allows Synterra to follow a drum rhythm, sequencer, modular system, or live performance. Synterra can receive and transmit notes and control data via USB MIDI, while its DIN MIDI OUT can control external synthesizers, drum machines, grooveboxes, and MIDI-to-CV systems. In Note Mode, external MIDI notes define the harmonic boundaries of the generative system. In Full MIDI Mode, the generative system is disabled, allowing Synterra’s internal sound engine to be played directly with a MIDI keyboard or sequencer. Generative and inverted sensor data, the note values produced by each voice, and their Note On/Off states can all be transmitted as separate MIDI CC messages. This means Synterra can function not only as a sound source but also as an evolving control center for software synthesizers, effects, visual systems, and multilayered installations. Powered via USB or 3 AA batteries, Synterra can be used in the studio, on stage, outdoors, or in long-running installations without requiring a computer. USB carries both power and MIDI through a single cable, while the internal sound engine can be connected to headphones, speakers, mixers, or sound systems through the 3.5 mm stereo output. Synterra brings environmental data, algorithmic composition, live performance, and synthesizer design together in a single instrument. The user can guide the system, define its boundaries, and intervene during a performance, while the resulting music always remains alive, evolving, and open to exploration. https://www.vaemi.net/product-page/synterra-bio-interactive-generative-synthesizer?currency=USD https://www.vaemi.net
