On the morning of 15 March, 44 BC, the most powerful man in the Roman world walked into a meeting of the Senate, and more than sixty senators were waiting for him with daggers hidden in their writing cases. He had been warned by a soothsayer, by his wife's dream, and by a stranger who pressed a note into his hand. He went anyway. This is the full story of the last day of Julius Caesar. It covers how the conqueror of Gaul became dictator for life, why Brutus, Cassius and Caesar's own trusted officers turned against him, the omens and the last dinner on the night before the Ides, the hour-by-hour morning that led him to the Curia of Pompey, and the chaos that followed, from the empty streets and the reading of his will to the funeral pyre in the Forum and the rise of Augustus. We also separate what the ancient sources actually say from later legend, including the famous words "Et tu, Brute?". All scenes are cinematic reconstructions based on historical sources, chronicles and modern scholarship. Sources: Plutarch (Lives of Caesar, Brutus and Antony), Suetonius (The Deified Julius), Appian (The Civil Wars), Cassius Dio (Roman History), Nicolaus of Damascus (Life of Augustus) and Cicero's letters; with modern scholarship including Barry Strauss (The Death of Caesar), Adrian Goldsworthy (Caesar: Life of a Colossus) and Mary Beard (SPQR).
