Could one of the biggest upgrades to the Indian Economy be hiding inside your wallet? The Reserve Bank Of India has taken the first formal step towards introducing Plastic Rupee banknotes, a move that could reduce costs, strengthen security and improve the durability of the Indian Rupee. The proposal has implications not only for cash users but also for the broader India Economy, making it a major development in Business News Today and Latest News. The RBI's subsidiary, Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited, has issued a Global Expression of Interest to establish a security-grade polymer substrate manufacturing facility, paving the way for Polymer Banknotes, Plastic Currency India and Polymer Currency India. Initial trials are expected to begin with ₹10 and ₹20 notes before expanding to higher denominations, including the widely used ₹500 note. Compared with existing cotton-linen banknotes, polymer notes are expected to last 3–4 times longer, resist water damage and incorporate advanced anti-counterfeiting features such as transparent security windows, metallic numerals and magnetic pseudo threads. The proposal comes as the Indian Economy continues to post strong India GDP Growth. Despite the rapid rise of digital payments, cash demand remains robust, with currency in circulation touching a record ₹42.86 trillion while banknote printing costs have climbed sharply. By extending the lifespan of notes and reducing replacement costs, the move could support long-term India Economic Growth, improve operational efficiency and contribute positively to the Economy.
