Lumberjacks in Hell was never supposed to last this long. If I’d known, maybe I’d have chosen a different name, something less tongue-in-cheek, less precarious. But in 2010, when I moved to Amsterdam, all I had was music. No plan, no grand vision. Just: press record and see what happens. First steps are always the most intimidating. From those early days, the label became a web of friendships, gestures, and chance encounters. The artwork for the first release came from my childhood friend Booming B; the second from Christopher Keyz, who would go on to design nearly all our sleeves until he passed away in 2019. The music itself often came from Chicago, edits from DJs who carried the torch and gave the label its first pulse of life. Some of those records - like Rayko’s 'All Around the Watchtower’ and the 'Chicago Service’ compilation - took on lives of their own, passed hand to hand, pressed and repressed, accumulating stories as they went. Fifteen years later, I see that nothing about this label has been linear. High points came in unexpected shapes: Philou Louzolo’s 'Alkebulan Republic', the 'From Hell With Love' compilation, and “Work It Out” with Karizma, a track that somehow carried itself from basements to festival stages - via Moodyman, Jazzy Jeff, The Blessed Madonna, Questlove, Jamie XX - to a Google commercial. And then silence, when the pandemic forced me into a pause. I built a studio, raised kids, and began to imagine what Lumberjacks 2.0 might sound like: less about samples, more about making something I could truly call my own. The idea of 'Random Acts of Kindness' was already there, lingering in the background. A realization that the whole thing - music, community, life - is held together by gestures we can’t repay. Parents, teachers, mentors, strangers who help us without asking anything in return. Joy and progress aren’t transactions; they’re gifts. The dancefloor has always been one of those spaces of exchange, where we offer ourselves up, where we share emotion without condition. So this compilation is both a celebration and a thank you. Eight new tracks, some fresh, some revisited, all rooted in that ethos. Luke Solomon reworks Goshawk and Greg Blackman’s 'Ain’t Gonna' into a club-ready anthem. Seanmont and I contribute 'Hard Times', our first original track together. Jkriv takes 'Real Love', my collaboration with Jerkboy and Million Miles, and steers it into pure disco delirium. And JT Donaldson opens the set with 'Let Me Show Ya', a melody you’ll be humming for weeks. 'Random Acts of Kindness' is a reminder, for myself as much as anyone else: music is a gift. A chain of generosity and shared spirit. After 15 years, Lumberjacks in Hell is still here not because of any master plan, but because of all the kindnesses, large and small, that carried us forward.
