In November 1915, a British diplomat and a French diplomat sat down in a quiet London office to divide up land neither of their countries had won yet. Nobody from that land was in the room. Nine months later, the region they carved up on paper would become Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine – borders that are still making headlines today. This is the story of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, and the century of contradiction it set in motion. While Mark Sykes and François Georges-Picot were secretly dividing the Ottoman Empire's Arab provinces between Britain and France, a separate arm of the British government was making an entirely different promise – to Sharif Hussein bin Ali, in exchange for leading the Arab Revolt against the Ottomans. Weeks later, the Balfour Declaration would add a third, overlapping commitment to the very same territory. All three promises couldn't be kept. None of the people living in the region got a vote on which one would win. I trace how that secret 1916 deal became the mandates of San Remo, how Faisal bin Hussein went from king of Syria to king of Iraq inside a single year, how the Kurds were promised a homeland that never arrived, and why – in 2014 – a group of fighters bulldozing a stretch of desert border felt the need to declare the end of Sykes-Picot. If you've ever wondered why the map of the Middle East looks the way it does, this is where that story actually begins. ------------------------- ⏱️ Chapters — see below 📱 Instagram, TikTok & Threads: @hoodiehistory ▶️ My short history videos on YouTube: @HoodieHistoryShorts 📬 Newsletter: Sign up for more history stories at hoodiehistory.com 📚 Ebooks: Go deeper with my Hoodie History ebooks – available now: https://www.amazon.com/author/hoodiehistory ------------------------- Chapters 0:00 - Intro: The Bulldozer and the Broken Border 1:34 - A Dying Empire and a Secret Deal 7:18 - Three Promises, One Piece of Land 10:32 - Redrawing the Map for Real 13:50 - Michael's Take & The Line Back to Today ------------------------- 🌟 Don't Forget To: Subscribe 🔔 for more fascinating stories from history!
