Solid propellant rocket motors are incredibly difficult to manufacture, especially at scale. Munitions India Limited holds an order book around ₹29,000 crore. Bharat Dynamics Ltd, which is one of India’s largest missile manufacturing companies, is currently sitting on an order book of around ₹26,000 crore. These companies are actively building building new missile assembly lines, propellant manufacturing facilities and rocket-motor testing facilities. Missiles like Agni V, Pralay, Astra Mk-II, Akash and BrahMos use solid propellant motors. That’s because these motors are compact, can be stored for years, and produce enormous amounts of thrust almost instantly. Bengaluru-based SpaceFields has built a 168-millimetre solid rocket motor which is 1.36 metres long, uses an HTPB-based composite propellant, and is able to produce more than 13 kilonewtons of peak thrust. This motor features an aerospike nozzle and much of its capability has been developed in-house. This covers everything from propellant chemistry, the motor itself, the motor’s thermal insulation and the nozzle geometry. SpaceFields has signed an agreement with Munitions India and Bharat Dynamics to work on rocket-booster refurbishment and the co-production of solid propellants and pyrotechnics. They’ve also partnered with multiple leading drone companies such as NewSpace, Raphe mPhibr and JSR Dynamics to develop and supply rocket-assisted take-off boosters. SpaceFields also recently inaugurated a new 42,000 square feet integrated R&D facility in Bengaluru and they've also been allotted more than 120 acres in Andhra Pradesh where they’re building a dedicated solid-propellant manufacturing facility to scale up production. They’re aiming for this facility to go live by 2028.
