Penang Hokkien is the language spoken by the Chinese in Penang from the time Penang was established. Yet, most of the people who speak the language every day do not know why they speak Penang Hokkien and where does it come from. Over the past decade, as the use of Penang Hokkien began to slip away in local society, those who are speaking it feel the urgency to do something, to arrest the slide, and save the language. But for the majority, they do not know where to start. As a digital content creator, I have been researching Penang for the past twenty years, and I regard Penang Hokkien, which is my mother tongue, as part of my identity. So, ten years ago, I embarked on an effort to preserve and modernise the language. When I first started, I was like everybody else, with only limited knowledge of the language. But the ten years of research has enabled me to compile the Penang Hokkien Dictionary, and create a writing system for the language. In order for Penang Hokkien to survive in this present age, it needs a written form. Otherwise, it will lose out to languages that can be written. But in addition to moving the language forward, I also count it necessary for people to finally understand something about the history of Penang Hokkien. And so, I create this video to help you gain a better appreciation of this language and where it came from.
