The Ruins of Cartago (Santiago Apóstol Parish), located in Costa Rica, were never fully built due to constant earthquakes. The most famous legend claims the temple was cursed by a tragic crime of passion and that, on foggy nights, the sorrowful soul of the headless priest wanders the grounds. The Legend of the Headless Priest There are two main versions regarding the origin of this ghost, both centered around the ancient parish: The Crime of the Brothers: Legend has it that Father Alonso Sandoval murdered his own brother, José, by slitting his throat on the altar steps or during his wedding celebration. The motive was a power struggle and their love for the same woman. As a punishment for committing such an atrocious sacrilege, the priest was beheaded, condemning his spirit to wander eternally through the ruins in search of redemption. The Curse of the Church: Another version claims that a man killed a priest over the altar for the love of a woman. Following this murder, the temple suffered a curse that prevented it from ever being finished; every time they attempted to rebuild it, a strong earthquake would tear it down again. Real History vs. Myth Destructions: The original 16th-century construction was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times due to earthquakes in 1630, 1718, 1841, and the devastating Santa Mónica earthquake in 1910. Reality: Historians have clarified that the legend of the murder supposedly took place in the 17th century, whereas the structure we know today as "the ruins" actually began stone construction in 1860—long after the alleged crime occurred.
