From Daphne Parker Powell's album 'The Death of Cool', coming May 22, 2026. Filmed & Edited by Danika Andrade. What happens when curiosity about death collides with love, faith, and personal freedom? On “Perpetual Light of the Void,” Daphne Parker Powell explores that uneasy territory with unflinching honesty and haunting lyricism. New Orleans–based singer-songwriter Daphne Parker Powell will release her new single, “Perpetual Light of the Void,” on March 27, 2026, a haunting and deeply autobiographical song that explores humanity’s enduring confrontation with mortality, faith, and the longing to transcend the limits of the body. Written during the creative surge that also produced Powell’s album The Starter Wife, “Perpetual Light of the Void”reflects a lifelong fascination with how humans ritualize death and imagine what lies beyond it. The title draws from the Catholic prayer “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them” — lux perpetua luceat eis — a phrase dating back to the 8th century that echoes the same questions about the soul’s passage from mortal life found in ancient Egyptian funerary texts and the Tibetan Bardo Thödol (The Tibetan Book of the Dead). Powell approaches these themes through an intensely personal lens, recalling the tension that can arise when curiosity about mortality collides with cultural expectations — captured in the opening line, “You said I was dark for keeping the book of the dead by the side of the bed.” The result is a meditation on refusing to suppress the parts of ourselves that ask difficult questions about death, belief, and the courage to live authentically. Musically intimate and emotionally raw, “Perpetual Light of the Void” balances stark imagery with moments of tenderness and dark humor, particularly in the refrain: “I love you like a tooth knocked out / I love you like the ache in the socket.” The song’s tone captures both the vulnerability and defiance that have come to define Powell’s songwriting.
