It’s the most valuable heist in Canadian history, and thieves managed to steal $18.7 million Canadian worth of pure Quebec maple syrup from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers. The theft made national headlines in Canada. Eventually, 26 people were arrested in connection to the crime. The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers (FPAQ) controls much of the supply of maple syrup around the world, and many liken the group to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). If there is a shortage of maple syrup one year, the FPAQ can tap into its global syrup reserve, which is primarily housed in Laurierville, Quebec just outside of Quebec City. The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist was a coordinated effort by a clever group of thieves. The thieves swapped out barrels of syrup with fake barrels filled with water. The knock-off barrels looked identical to the real ones. The paint color was exactly the same, and the thieves even made fake stickers to match the ones put on by the FPAQ. The crime went unnoticed for over a year, and the FPAQ didn’t notice that something was askew until the barrels started to rust. The water made the barrels rust, which would not have happened if they were still filled with syrup. The Sûreté du Québec, RCMP, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection launched a massive investigation. Some of the thieves were sentenced to years in jail and hefty fines.
