This 3-minute video reveals how Fine Art Conservation Laboratories (https://www.fineartconservationlab.com/water-damage/save-water-damaged-artwork-heirlooms-expert-tips-for-los-angeles-ca/) restored the historic portrait of Don Manuel Dominguez for the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum in the Los Angeles area. Painted in 1864 by Solomon Nunes Carvalho, the oil painting suffered severe water damage, canvas shrinkage, and “tent cleavage,” then was scraped and heavily over-painted by earlier “repairs.” Art conservators carefully stabilized flaking paint, reduced disfiguring over-paint, and used reversible inpainting to bring back Manuel Dominguez’s original likeness. The video also explains why Dominguez is such an important figure in California history and what museum staff and homeowners should do—and never do—when a cherished painting gets wet (like scrape off the flaking and have an artist repaint it!). If you have questions about water-damaged artwork, historic portraits, or family heirloom paintings, contact Fine Art Conservation Laboratories: 805-564-3438 (Southern California) or 805-748-0145 (Las Vegas / regional disaster response).
