The Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Project has created a remarkable chapter in Andhra Pradesh’s irrigation history by generating more than 60 times the returns on every rupee invested and contributing to the creation of an estimated ₹1 lakh crore in economic benefits. Launched by the Chandrababu Naidu government in July 2015, the Pattiseema project was completed in record time and dedicated to the nation by March 2016. Built at an estimated cost of ₹1,651 crore, the project earned recognition in the Limca Book of Records for its rapid execution. One of its major achievements has been the stabilization of irrigation facilities across nearly 13 lakh acres in the Krishna Delta. By meeting a significant portion of the delta’s water requirements with Godavari water, Pattiseema has helped save Krishna River water in the Srisailam reservoir. This water can then be utilized for the drinking water, agricultural and industrial needs of Rayalaseema through projects such as Pothireddypadu and Handri-Neeva. Over the years, the project has reportedly diverted more than 500 TMC of Godavari water into the Krishna basin. It has played a particularly important role during droughts and periods of inadequate rainfall, helping protect crops and support farmers. In 2016, the project transferred 55.75 TMC of water in 134 days. The figures include 105.80 TMC in 2017, 96.94 TMC in 2018, 58.72 TMC in 2023, and 57.70 TMC in 2026, according to the figures provided. The economic benefits have also been significant. Estimates cited by irrigation associations indicate benefits of approximately ₹26,775 crore to the agricultural sector and ₹78,000 crore to the aquaculture sector, highlighting the project's contribution to farmers, aqua farmers and the wider state economy. Although Pattiseema faced political criticism in its early years, including being mocked as “Vattisima,” its reported water transfers and economic benefits have strengthened its importance in Andhra Pradesh's irrigation infrastructure.
