This might be the first documented case of a sperm whale deliberately attacking and sinking a ship since the whaling era. What was supposed to be an idyllic Pacific voyage turned into an 18-hour battle for survival when the four-person crew felt a sudden and massive impact that threw the helmsman off balance and knocked the vessel off course. Not knowing what happened, the sailor noticed a brown discoloration in the water and a sperm whale. “We looked out to our port side, and there were six to eight, a pod of whales there. So then it became clear that that's what it was.” Below deck, the damage was catastrophic. The steering system was completely shattered and water quickly began pouring through multiple gashes in the fiberglass hull. Despite desperate efforts to seal the leaks with expansion foam and manually bail out incoming water, the crew realized the damaged ship could not be saved. As night began to fall, they triggered their emergency locator beacon, boarded a life raft, and abandoned ship. As the yacht sank below the ocean waves, the crew cut their tether to prevent being dragged down with it. The Royal New Zealand Air Force dispatched a P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft to establish radio contact, while a nearby 470-foot container ship, the MV Sofrana Surville, diverted to assist. By 6:00 a.m. the following morning, all four crew members were safely hauled aboard the cargo ship. Unharmed. This harrowing event is eerily similar to what’s going on off the coast of Spain and Portugal, where a group of Iberian orcas known as Gladis have attacked over 700 vessels and sunk at least 8 since 2020. And in another strange coincidence, this apparent attack by a sperm whale on a yacht occurred just a few months after a new study released the first ever documentation of sperm whales headbutting each other. So what’s going on? Is there something in the water?
