China just claimed the world speed record for production cars, and the machine that did it — the Yangwang U9 Extreme — hit 308 miles per hour (496 km/h) on a test track in Germany, dethroning the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport that held the crown since 2019. With nearly 3,000 horsepower from four electric motors and a 1,200-volt electrical system, the Yangwang U9 Extreme is the fastest production car ever built anywhere on Earth, of any kind. But it is not alone. In a single year, China built five hypercars that beat European legends like Bugatti, Lamborghini, and Ferrari at their own game, on tracks those brands dominated for a century. The countdown starts with the Nio EP9, the angular pioneer that set the electric lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife — the brutal 20-kilometer Green Hell — with 1,360 horsepower, four-motor torque vectoring, and a carbon-fiber body. Only 16 were built, each costing over $1,000,000. Next comes the GAC Hyptec SSR, a 1,225-horsepower scissor-door hypercar that hits 100 km/h in 1.9 seconds for a fraction of a Ferrari's price. The Zeekr 001 FR redefines the category entirely: a 1,300-horsepower family wagon with quad-motor drive that can perform a full tank turn in place. The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra — yes, from the phone company — packs 1,548 horsepower, lapped the Nürburgring in 7:04 beating a $3,000,000 Rimac Nevera, and costs just $74,000. And crowning the list, the Yangwang U9 Extreme combines 3,000 horsepower, advanced cooling, massive downforce, and wind-tunnel-tested aerodynamics to hold peak power long enough to break the 308 mph barrier, making it the first Chinese car to wear the fastest-production-car badge in a century of racing history.
