You are REQUIRED by law to have a licensed guide with you if you want to approach the lava flow on Trail 701 (the Pista Altomontana trail). You do not have to have a guide if you stay 500m from the lava, and stunning views are common even at this distance. The best licensed guide company is Grupo Guide Enta Nord: https://guidetnanord.com/en/ WHATSAPP: +393455741330 (English is spoken) (Office hours are 10am-1pm and 4pm-7pm, Italy time) My tour cost 50E and departed from the ski hut at Piano Vetore: https://maps.app.goo.gl/SsvpfGnQ9FCoYEmf8 Helmets are provided, and if snow shoes are required, they will rent them to you directly for an additional 10E. "Waterproof" hiking boots, rain jacket/windbreaker, warm jacket, 1/2 liter of water, trail snacks, and a headlamp are required. (I had gloves and trekking poles, which were both invaluable.) Equipment can be rented at Quad Tours at the nearby tourist center of Rifugio Sapienza, 3km from the meeting point at the ski hut: https://maps.app.goo.gl/sk1k6gQcn2Hzp6jz7 The least crowded trailhead (which Grupo Guide Etna Nord also departs from) is at Piano Vetore, for trail 701, located here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/SsvpfGnQ9FCoYEmf8 The shorter trail (701A) departs from this trailhead: https://maps.app.goo.gl/LrrRtbSiBdXLDUSv9 (This trailhead is much more crowded, especially on weekend afternoons and evenings.) This trail merges with 701 after a short distance. Stay on trail 701 at every trail junction, headed in west/northwest direction (in the direction of Rifugio Galvarina) and you'll reach the spot where the most recent lava flow has crossed the trail after approximately 5km/3mi. (This area is approximately here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/FgNWfH1t1MBECR8B8 and this link may not work after more than a month from publication due to Google limitations.) The average hiker on snow will require 90 minutes to reach the area. I hiked back to the 701A trailhead from the lava flow in 50 minutes, hiking very fast with poles. Alltrails main page for Etna Park: https://www.alltrails.com/parks/italy/sicily/parco-delletna (Alltrails does not have a dedicated route for trail 701 to the area of the current lava flow, but if you have the area trails downloaded, you can track your route on the map as you hike, to ensure you stay on trail 701 at each junction.) Download Google Offline Maps for the entire region, and the Alltrails map for Etna Park BEFORE driving up the mountain, as there are many areas with little or no cell coverage.
