You do not have to have a guide if you stay 500m from the lava, and stunning views are common even at this distance. This trail merges with 701 after a short distance. Stay on trail 701 at every trail junction, headed in west/northwest direction (in the direction of Rifugio Galvarina) and you'll reach the spot where the most recent lava flow has crossed the trail after approximately 5km/3mi. (This area is approximately here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/FgNWfH1t1MBECR8B8 and this link may not work after more than a month from publication due to Google limitations.) The average hiker on snow will require 90 minutes to reach the area. I hiked back to the 701A trailhead from the lava flow in 50 minutes, hiking very fast with poles. Download Google Offline Maps for the entire region, and the Alltrails map for Etna Park BEFORE driving up the mountain, as there are many areas with little or no cell coverage.
