Thanks for your incredible support on my previous devlog. One year laterā¦itās finally time for the second! Wishlist Plant Tales on Steam if youāre interested in playing it eventually :D https://store.steampowered.com/app/3693970/Plant_Tales/ This video showcases how the new open-world procedural generation is going. I should probably address the huge time gap between uploads - tbh I just prefer working on the game much more than making videos. That is unlikely to change, so I will have to continue to ask for your patience going forwards. As of uploading, this marks 2 years since I first started Plant Tales (though I only work on it 3 days a week). I can't believe how much time has passed! Although Iām super happy with how the game is coming along, itās definitely a little more ambitious than I originally planned lol. The backlog of features and ideas I have just keeps growing. And, I often find myself revisiting features that I already considered ādoneā. But hey, game dev is all about iteration, so Iām hoping the game will be better for it overall. There is a lot of other progress that I havenāt explicitly showcased, such as dialogue, quests, shopkeepers, furniture, tools, music, complete overhaul of inventory system, and pests. My next areas of focus are improving the combat and weapons, adding a story and an end goal, and actually starting playtesting (eep!). Iām still deciding whether I should release a demo build on a seperate storefront or just use the Steam playtesting system. If anyone has any recommendations between the two, please let me know. Your feedback on my previous devlog was also super helpful, especially regarding the art. I have now significantly bumped up the contrast and saturation, and hopefully fixed the scale of objects in relation to the player. Also, turns out I have been recording videos using the wrong colour settings. So all my previous videos look way more desaturated compared to what I was seeing in-gameā¦whoops. My videos are a way to showcase progress on the game, but I also hope to teach technical concepts along the way. So for this video I decided to discuss an optimisation technique called time slicing (frame spreading). I thought it was a really cool technique when I first stumbled upon it, and I havenāt seen it discussed much. Fair warning though, it does feel a bit hacky and I would only recommend it as a last resort. I do believe multithreading should be preferred where possible. Itās nice to be aware of options though! Technically I *could* have made my chunk generation code compatible with multithreading in Godot by doing off-tree generation. But it would have required a huuuuuge refactor. Also some of you may wonder āwhy didnāt you just make the chunk size smallerā? Currently my chunk size is 32x32 - I did actually try a 16x16 chunk size and unfortunately the frame stutter was still present. Any smaller than that would probably start introducing a lot of overhead, though I suppose I didnāt test it directly. The other reason I didnāt wanna go smaller is due to my handcrafted structures, which currently have to fit within a single chunk. Unfortunately I still do have the occasional frame time spikes that time slicing doesnāt solve, so the optimisation journey isnāt quite over yet. I think itās due to garbage collection though - so I might look at object pooling at some point. pray 4 me Music (in order): - Intro music made by me - Roommate by Oneul - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1Llh8cNRtc - Potato chips by Oneul - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_Qh8w_0c6o - Undertale OST: 009 - Enemy Approaching (god this is such a banger) - https://pixabay.com/music/bossa-nova-bossa-176627/ - Palm Tree by Oneul - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHYXrmteQPw - https://pixabay.com/music/upbeat-space-chillout-14194/ - Lazy mood by Oneul - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUG1PGRj4sI&t=539s - Outro music made by me Chapters: 00:00 - Intro 00:49 - Procedural Generation & Biome Layout 01:58 - Terrain & Noise 05:22 - Enemies & Combat 06:02 - Wild Clay & Pottery 06:56 - Structures 07:38 - Waypoints 08:49 - Chunk Loading Stutter Problem 10:15 - Time Slicing 12:37 - Outro
