In Session 13 of our Srimad Bhagavad Gita series, we begin Chapter 3 — Karma Yoga. In this session, we cover Shlokas 1–8 and understand why Arjuna is still confused after listening to Shri Krishna’s teachings in Chapter 2. Before beginning the shlokas, we discuss some important spiritual concepts that help us understand the deeper philosophy behind the Bhagavad Gita. We explore the concepts of Parabrahman, Ishwar, Maya, Prakriti and Srishti, and understand the relationship between the conscious and material aspects of creation. We discuss how the entire creation functions through the interaction of consciousness and Prakriti. The physical body, mind and the different aspects of material creation belong to Prakriti, while the Atma is conscious in nature. Understanding this distinction helps us understand why spiritual knowledge ultimately asks us to recognise our true identity beyond the body and mind. Moving into Chapter 3, Arjuna asks Shri Krishna an important question. If spiritual knowledge and wisdom are so important, why is Shri Krishna asking him to perform the difficult action of fighting a war? Arjuna feels that the teachings of knowledge and action appear contradictory and asks Shri Krishna to clearly explain the path that will lead to his highest good. Shri Krishna begins by explaining that there are different approaches to spiritual progress. The path of knowledge and the path of selfless action are not necessarily contradictory. Different people may follow different approaches according to their nature and spiritual qualification. Shri Krishna then makes an extremely practical point: simply giving up actions does not make a person free from Karma. Neither can spiritual perfection be attained merely by externally renouncing action. No person can remain completely without action even for a moment. Our body and mind are continuously functioning, and the Gunas of Prakriti constantly lead us towards different activities. Therefore, the real question is not simply whether we act, but with what understanding and attitude we perform our actions. Shri Krishna also warns against external control without internal transformation. A person may physically restrain the senses, but if the mind continues to remain absorbed in desires and sense objects, that external renunciation alone does not represent true spiritual discipline. Instead, a person who learns to control the senses through the mind and continues performing the appropriate duties without excessive attachment follows a better path. Finally, in Shloka 8, Shri Krishna gives a very practical instruction: perform your Niyat Karma, your prescribed duties and responsibilities. Action is better than inaction, because even the maintenance of our physical body would not be possible without action. 📖 In this session, you'll discover: • Beginning of Chapter 3 — Karma Yoga • Shlokas 1–8 of Chapter 3 • Introduction to Parabrahman, Ishwar, Maya and Prakriti • Understanding Srishti and the basic framework of creation • Conscious and material aspects of creation • Difference between Atma and Prakriti • Why Arjuna is confused at the beginning of Chapter 3 • Knowledge versus Action: Arjuna’s question to Shri Krishna • Jnana Yoga and Karma Yoga • Why simply abandoning Karma does not lead to spiritual perfection • Why no person can remain completely without action • How the Gunas of Prakriti influence actions • External control versus internal control of the senses • Importance of controlling the mind and senses • Performing Karma without excessive attachment • Meaning of Niyat Karma • Why performing our duties is better than inaction • Practical application of Karma Yoga in everyday life Chapter 3 begins by clearing an important misunderstanding about spirituality. Spiritual growth does not necessarily mean withdrawing from our responsibilities or abandoning our everyday duties. Shri Krishna gradually teaches Arjuna that the problem is not action itself. What matters is our understanding, our attachment and the state of mind with which we perform our actions. Karma Yoga therefore brings spirituality directly into everyday life. Our family responsibilities, professional duties and other appropriate responsibilities can themselves become part of our spiritual journey when performed with the right understanding and without excessive attachment to the results. Through these opening shlokas, Shri Krishna begins preparing Arjuna for a deeper understanding of Karma Yoga and shows us how spiritual wisdom and responsible action can work together. #BhagavadGita #SrimadBhagavadGita #BhagavadGitaHindi #LordKrishna #KrishnaVani #KrishnaTeachings #SanatanDharma #VedVyas #Mahabharata #Arjuna #KarmaYoga #GitaChapter3 #BhagavadGitaChapter3 #KrishnaArjunaSamvad #GitaWisdom #GeetaGyan #SanatanWisdom #Vedanta #Spirituality #Hinduism
