A wartime battleship was a small armored city. A US Iowa-class carried around 2,700 men, a King George V about 1,500, a Yamato more than 2,300, all of them packed into hulls where every passageway was a compromise between living space and armor. The standard was four-on-eight-off watches around the clock. Junior enlisted slept in stacked canvas bunks in compartments deep below the main armor belt, while officers had wardrooms with white tablecloths. Compared to a destroyer or submarine, conditions were luxurious. There was a real galley running three hot meals a day, a sick bay with surgeons, a chaplain, a ship's band, and on American ships often a soda fountain. Combat for a battleship sailor in WW2 was usually not what the recruiting posters had promised. The great gun duels of imagination almost never happened. What did happen was air defense, day after day. Crews stood to general quarters for hours at a stretch, the 5-inch and 40mm and 20mm gunners hammering at incoming aircraft until barrels glowed and ammunition handlers passed shells until their hands bled. The noise of even a single 16-inch firing was beyond description, and a full main battery broadside could knock men off their feet two decks below. Most battleship sailors saw less actual surface combat than the men on a single hard-luck destroyer, but they spent more time at sea, in greater discomfort, and under longer threat from above than almost anyone else in the fleet.
