The observable universe always appears as a perfect sphere. And there are two reasons for that. First, light has a fixed speed of 299,792 km/s. Because light is not infinite in speed, it takes time to travel. The further out we look into space, the further back in time we are looking. A star 1 billion light years away appears to us as it was 1 billion years ago. A galaxy 10 billion light years away appears as it was 10 billion years ago. That lookback limit is the same in every direction around us. Any boundary that is equal in every direction from a single point forms one shape. A sphere. With you always at the centre. Second, the universe is expanding. Galaxies far enough from us are moving away faster than the speed of light. Their light will never reach us. They are permanently beyond our reach, no matter how long we wait. This means the sphere can never grow beyond a certain limit, and some galaxies are leaving it forever. But there is a harder limit than both of these. As we look deeper into space and further back in time, we see the universe becoming hotter and denser. The universe has been expanding for 13.8 billion years, and going further back means going back to a time when it was far more compressed and far more hot. At some point we hit a wall. In its earliest years the universe was so hot and so dense that it was filled entirely with plasma. A superheated fog so thick that light could not travel through it. Light would scatter in every direction and go nowhere, the same way sunlight scatters inside a thick cloud. This opaque phase lasted roughly 380,000 years and is called the Epoch of Recombination. The moment it ended, light travelled freely for the first time in the history of the universe. We can only see up to the surface of that fog. That surface is called the cosmic microwave background. It is not a wall in space. It is a wall in time. The moment the universe finally cooled enough for light to escape. That is the true edge of the observable universe. Not where space ends. But where light did not exist yet to show us anything. Everything beyond that wall happened. We will just never know what.
