The most famous war in Chinese literature begins with a job offer. In Journey to the West, first printed in 1592, Heaven is a palace with a morning audience, a staff list and a scale of ranks. The Monkey King, Sun Wukong, is hired as Keeper of the Heavenly Horses, asks what grade the job is, and is told it has none. A hundred thousand heavenly soldiers, a furnace, a bet with the Buddha and five hundred years under a mountain all follow from that conversation. This video is about one thing in the novel: Heaven. How it is organised, who works there, and why its best-known story is, on paper, a staffing problem. Along the way it sets the Chinese heaven beside Olympus, Valhalla, Milton's Paradise Lost and the nine orders of angels. The comparison is not a ranking. It is the quickest way to see what is unusual about this one. This is the third video in a series: Daoism (the gods have job titles), the Chinese underworld (the dead go through courts), and now the court above them both. A note on sources: the plot details follow the hundred-chapter novel (mainly chapters 3 to 7, 31, 83 and 100). How the book should be read is disputed, and the video says so.
