Historical note: The secrecy surrounding Thyra’s pregnancy means that some details vary between later accounts. Vilhelm Frimann Marcher is generally identified as the child’s father, and Thyra’s daughter is usually identified as Maria Katharina “Kate” Jørgensen, who was raised outside the royal family. Contemporary public explanations for Thyra’s absence included illness, traditionally described in later accounts as jaundice. Marcher died by suicide in January 1872, shortly after the child’s birth.
