He settled in Carey Gully in the Adelaide Hills, where he assisted his uncles on their farm and worked various jobs to make a living, including at Chapmans in Nairne, SA. Pellegrino married Maria in 1976, and together they had two children: Connie (1977) and Angelo (1979). The same year, a new chapter began when Pellegrino and Maria opened their first fruit and vegetable shop in the Foodland complex in Mount Barker, naming it Peterās Fruit Bowl. In 1985, Fernando followed his brother to Australia, inspired by Pellegrinoās success. The same year, the brothers purchased a farm in Hahndorf from the Percy family and began growing their own produce. They cultivated a wide variety of crops, including cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, zucchini, sweetcorn, potatoes, herbs, spinach and silverbeet, among others. Their fresh harvest supplied Peterās Fruit Bowl and was also sold at the East End Market in Adelaide ā later relocated to Pooraka and now known as the Adelaide Produce Market. about2 img In 1985, Fernando married Marisa Scarfo, and together they had two sons: Angelo (1986) and Antonio (1987). While Maria managed Peterās Fruit Bowl in Mount Barker, the brothers worked on the Hahndorf farm. Many locals stopped by to buy fresh produce straight from the farm. Over time, customers began asking for more than what the farm could provide. To meet these growing needs, the family started sourcing additional goods from the market. Soon, it became clear that Hahndorf needed its own store. In 1990, the family opened the Hahndorf Vegetable Garden, with Marisa managing the new shop while Maria continued running Peterās Fruit Bowl. The brothers stayed focused on farming, ensuring the shelves were always stocked with the freshest produce.
