In today’s vlog, I continue my Afghanistan journey and explore the history of Sultan Mahmood Ghazni, the ruler who invaded and looted India 17 times. For centuries, Indians have called him a “lootera”, but in Afghanistan many people still consider him a respected figure. This vlog shows both sides of history — from the perspective of Afghans and from my own Indian viewpoint. Our day started in Bamiyan City, where we had rented a car to travel across Afghanistan. The night in Bamiyan was extremely cold, around –8 to –10°C, and due to the late hours we decided to stay overnight in Maidan Shahar. Early in the morning, we continued our journey again. By around 1 PM, we reached Ghazni, an ancient city that was once the powerful capital of the Ghaznavid Empire. After having lunch, we went straight to explore the Ghazni Fort, a place that once symbolised power but today stands in ruins — broken, neglected, and almost looking like garbage. It was shocking to see that a king who looted India 17 times, whose empire was once so strong, has a fort that has almost vanished… while so many Indian temples he targeted are still standing strong even after 1000 years. I met and spoke to local Afghan people, who shared their views about the city and about Mahmood Ghazni. For them, Ghazni is still remembered as a powerful king, even “like a god”. But for Indians, he remains one of the biggest invaders and looters in history. In this vlog, I also explain: How Mahmood Ghazni’s father was bought as a slave in the market, How his father became the ruler of Ghazni, How Mahmood Ghazni defeated his own elder brother to become king, And how he launched 17 invasions into India, taking unimaginable wealth back to Ghazni. This video is not meant to offend anyone — it is a historical exploration, showing the contrast between Ghazni’s destroyed legacy and India’s surviving temples even after centuries.
