No crane could lift it into place, and no conventional foundation could support it like a tower. To construct a space elevator approximately 96,000 kilometers long, Obayashi Corporation proposed a radically different sequence: begin in orbit, deploy a thin seed tether toward Earth, extend the outer section beyond geostationary orbit, capture the lower end at a floating equatorial Earth Port, and reinforce the cable through hundreds of climber cycles. This documentary visualizes how that conceptual construction process could work. We follow the proposed system from rocket launches and orbital assembly to two-direction tether deployment, ocean capture, controlled pre-tensioning, 510 reinforcement cycles, modular station construction, climber operations, orbital-debris monitoring and robotic maintenance. But one challenge remains greater than all the others. The required tether material does not yet exist at the necessary planetary scale. Carbon nanotubes are potential candidates, but current technology cannot manufacture a continuous cable with the strength, uniformity, durability and reliability required for the complete system. This video presents the Obayashi Space Elevator Construction Concept as a future engineering proposal.
