If you want to capture fertility from weird & wild sources, then consider adding ‘liquid gold’ to your compost. Historically, the use of urine in agriculture was commonplace before the invention of the modern sewer system. Urine is full of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) & potassium (K), which are the three key nutrients used in inorganic fertilisers made from fossil fuels. Only about 40 per cent of the NPK in commercial fertilisers is absorbed by the soil, & the rest pollutes the atmosphere, rivers, lakes & oceans. Global reserves of phosphorus are quickly running out, so urine may become a sustainable substitute. It seems crazy to flush away wee instead of using it to fertilise our gardens, especially because the urine that a family produces would provide enough NPK to sustain a home garden. Undiluted urine can be added directly to compost as an activator, but be mindful of balancing this nitrogen-rich input with carbon, & don’t add it to a compost bin that is overly wet. It can also be used as a soil drench (not a foliar spray) by diluting one part wee with 10–15 parts water. It’s true that there will be some bacteria present in urine; however, if you’re healthy, then the biology in your compost & soil can sort them out. But is is important to avoid using urine on your garden if you’ve just taken antibiotics or other medications. The pH of urine for most people is around 6.2, so it’s relatively neutral, but it does contain salts. Don’t use it near salt-sensitive plants (such as onions or potatoes). Finally, don’t forget to make use of urine from livestock like cows, sheep, horses & rabbits (etc). Urine soaked bedding such as hay or wood shavings are a great addition to your compost, as it already has a balance of nitrogen & carbon. This is an edited extract from Kate's (the person voicing this video) book ‘The Compost Coach’.
