The Supreme Court has rejected activist Umar Khalid’s bail plea in connection with the February 2020 Delhi riots, saying a prima facie reading of the evidence suggested he played a central role. Speaking to BBC's Umang Poddar, Umar Khalid’s father SQR Ilyas said the family had expected a positive verdict and questioned the court’s reliance on statements from protected witnesses. He argued that there was no direct evidence linking his son to the violence and asked why Umar Khalid was being singled out. The court said that when evidence was assessed collectively, rather than individually, it pointed to a conspiratorial role. The rejection of bail means Umar Khalid may remain in jail for at least another year. Mr Ilyas also criticised the use of the UAPA law, saying it reverses the presumption of innocence and can lead to prolonged imprisonment without trial. He said his son remains resilient despite spending more than five years in custody.
