Can you measure a whale using a drone? The Tandem team developed WHASER, a lightweight LiDAR rangefinder designed to help researchers measure whales and other marine animals from the air. A year after developing the first WHASER prototype for Whale Wise, Tandem returns to build a new production batch for conservation researchers around the world. Sponsored by Mouser Electronics, this latest chapter takes the team to Massachusetts to deliver and test WHASER with Ocean Alliance, the Center for Coastal Studies, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Out in the Atlantic, the team joins Ocean Alliance to locate and tag a whale using a drone. While the tag captures underwater footage and movement data, WHASER records the distance measurements researchers need to accurately calculate the animal’s size, all through an incredibly non-invasive process. But whales are only the beginning. The team also tests WHASER above a grey seal colony for the first time, demonstrating how an engineering project that began with one conservation challenge could become a scalable research tool for scientists around the world.
