Date filmed: 22/09/2020 Route: The Berks & Hants Line - Between Midgham and Thatcham Stations Location: Colthrop Lane, Colthrop Trains: Lowering 1 (0:00): Class 800 (Great Western Railway) - 2:00 Class 802 (Great Western Railway) - 2:53 - Lowering 2 (Starts at 3:29): Class 387 (Great Western Railway) - 5:25 - Lowering 3 (Starts at 6:00): Class 66 (Freightliner) - 7:44 Filmed in the company of: steadyeddy69uk The level crossing located on the Berks and Hants Line around three quarters of a mile east of Thatcham Station in a very industrial surrounding. This level crossing has two alarms which sound at a moderate volume to warn of the barriers lowering, and the level crossing is controlled by the crossing box located next to it. This box also controls Midgham and Thatcham Level Crossings, and the crossing keeper watches over them via CCTV. This level crossing has a total of five LED wigwags and it is busy for both fast and slow trains, as well as industrial and heavy goods traffic using it to access nearby premises. On each side of the level crossing are gantries with black/yellow bars hanging from them, which prevent over height vehicles from passing over this level crossing because of the live overhead wires, and these were installed not too long after the overhead electrification for this section of the line was completed. A total of three separate lowerings are included in this video. For the first lowering, the combination of vegetation and a very tall kerb in that corner of the level crossing made it a little difficult to find a decent starting point of view for that video. Timestamps are included above near the top of the description to direct you to both when each lowering starts, as well as when each train passes. A Freightliner Class 66 passes at speed in the direction of Newbury and the South West in the third lowering. Parts of the video have been cut to save a long wait for each train (the freight train passed nearly five minutes after the barriers were lowered for the third time), and other parts have been muted because of loud talking. On duty in the level crossing's crossing box in this video was steadyeddy69uk, the friendly crossing keeper on duty at the time. Thanks for watching!
