How to Install a Voltmeter & Amp Meter on ANY DC Train Layout! Want to take the guesswork out of troubleshooting your DC layout and see exactly how many volts and amps your older locomotives are pulling? In this episode of Classic Model Trains, I’m Ron, and I’m taking you step-by-step through my journey of installing analog voltmeter and amp meter gauges into a custom control panel layout. While hunting for the perfect transformer on eBay, I originally looked at the Model Rectifier Corporation (MRC) Model 550 because it came with built-in gauges. However, I ended up finding the ultimate power supply for my needs: the MRC Control Master 20, chosen specifically for its walk-around throttle capability. As a huge bonus, the Control Master 20 features dedicated external hookups on the back for voltage and amp meters! Because almost no standard hobby transformers include these external outputs, I’ve broken this video down into two distinct parts: The Panel Installation: Watch me use a 2-inch hole saw to cut custom mounts into my stained wood dual-control panel, wire up the 18-gauge speaker wire using heavy-duty mechanic's crimpers, remove the meter shunt, and test the system with an Athearn Blue Box SD-45 locomotive. The Universal Modification Hack: If your transformer doesn't have factory gauge ports, don't worry! At the end of the video, I walk through full electrical schematics showing you how to bypass anti-tamper screws, test with a digital multimeter, and wire these exact gauges into ANY power pack on the market. Knowing your amp flow is a game-changer for diagnostic work. If a locomotive sits dead on the track with high voltage but zero amps, you instantly know you have dirty wheels. If the amps peg out completely, you've got a dead short in the motor rotor! Have you added analog telemetry to your control board? Let me know your thoughts or questions on the schematics in the comments below!
