In episode 8 of EducationInContext, in conversation with author and educator Zaretta Hammond, we challenge deficit narratives about Black students, school attendance, families, and engagement. Students may be navigating a lack of belonging, stereotype threat, negative school experiences, family histories with educational institutions, and environments that make attending school feel like choosing between academic learning and their own emotional well-being. Instead of pathologizing students and families, Hammond pushes educators toward a different approach: community and authentic family partnership. And partnership means more than inviting families into the building to explain attendance policies, expectations, or rules. It means building trust, listening to parents as children's first teachers, breaking bread together, and cultivating meaningful relationships with families. It also means creating learning communities where Black and Brown children can experience both belonging and intellectual development.
